So sometimes when cooking you need to take one dish and make it something completely different. This could be because you do not have the correct ingredients in the house, or because you just want to come up with something different. In our house it is very hard to make dishes with dairy because my daughter and I cannot have it. My husband loves mac and cheese and I figured I would surprise him and make him a side dish of it while I used the rest of the pasta to make macaroni salad.
Now normal mac and cheese is made with cheddar cheese, and lots of it. Well my Italian style mac and cheese is made with cheese, proscuitto, and crumbled crackers on top and baked. The cheesy taste with a salty bite and then a crunchy texture. The cream that coats the grooves on the macaroni, to the crunch from being baked. Are you hungry yet? Then follow my recipe below to wow the pants off your next dinner guest!
Italian Mac & Cheese
1 stick of butter
1/4 cup of milk
1/4 cup of flour
2 pieces of cheddar cheese
1/2 cup of mozzarella cheese
Ritz Crackers
2 pieces of prosciutto
Italian Seasoning
Start by putting the butter in a sauce pan and then adding the milk on a low/medium heat. Then mix in the flour and the 1 piece of cheddar and mozzarella cheese. Then add in the Italian seasoning and cook until it thickens then remove from the heat.
Once it thickens, add it to the macaroni and then add in shredded pieces of proscuitto, Then add the 2nd piece of cheddar cheese and the rest of the mozzerella cheese and then add it to a 8x10 pan. Then take the crackers and crumble them onto the top and bake on 350 for about 25 min.
Take it out, scoop out a nice cheesy bite, and enjoy! All I have to say is my husband had 2nds and the second day finished the pan off. I guess this recipe is a winner!
