Yes part of your vows is in sickness and in health. Well in my house, food makes my husband happy. If I make fresh delicious food, it will keep him healthy. My husband works hard to take care of our family by working two jobs. I do work full time as a mother but also as an office manager for a traffic engineering firm. I still find a way to show my appreciation to my husband for his hard work.
We got a bag of apples that I knew my kids did not like, so he mentioned the one day to me "if you want, I would love one of your apple pies or crisps". So the other night after feeding the kids and I and getting them bathed, I found the last 2% of my energy to whip up an apple crumble pie for him.
First make a crust. There are many recipes, but I used this one because it was quick and easy!
PIE CRUST
1/2 cup vegatable oil (you can use coconut as well)
1/4 cup 2% milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
Mix this up and then press into a greased pie pan
Now peel and dice up your apples (5-6) and put into the crust. Sprinkle on some sugar and cinnamon.
CRUMB TOPPING
1/4 cup of white sugar
1/4 cup of brown sugar
1 cup of butter
cinnamon
2 sticks of butter (room temp)
Put the dry ingredients into the bowl and add in the sticks of butter. Mold with your hands the butter into the dry ingredients and create a crumbly topping.
Turn oven on to 350 and throw in the apple pie for 20-30 min then remove and add the topping and roses and place back into the oven.
APPLE ROSES
2 apples (prefer red skinned apples)
Dough
butter
cinnamon
I found this on thethriftycouple.com. It calls for using puffed pastry, which I didnt have so I made up a quick batch of pizza dough. I rolled it out and then cut it into thin strips. Melt the butter and cinnamon and brush a light layer onto each strip. Then take the apples and cut them off the core and then using a mandolin or a knife make VERY thin slices. I threw the slices into a pan with lemon juice and a splash of sugar for about 5 min and then took them out. Then lay the apple slices horizontally on the strip of dough (see picture below) and roll the dough and it looks like a rose! Then place on top of the pie.
